Falls on South Prong Left Fork Soquee River

Tray Mountain Wilderness

Habersham County
Helen, GA

GPS Location:

34.79091, -83.65778

Waterfall Height:

60 feet

The South Prong joins the Left Fork Soquee River just downstream from Soquee River Falls and its deep gorge. This large tributary is labeled as South Prong Goshen Creek on some topographic maps, but it's really the South Prong Left Fork Soquee River. It is home to several waterfalls, only one of which I've seen pictures of. The waterfall described here lies about 0.7 mile upstream from the confluence. It was first documented by Brandi Elliott, who called it Ahimsa Falls, with "Ahimsa" being the name for the Hindu and Buddhist principle of nonviolence toward all things. The waterfall consists of two vertical tiers, about 30 feet each, separated by a small area of flat water.

Other waterfalls are likely located farther upstream in the headwaetrs of the South Prong on Chimney Mountain. I have not found any pictures of them. Additionally, a 40-foot sliding waterfall is found on a wet-weather tributary of South Prong to the south of Ahimsa Falls (GPS: 34.787291, -83.656152; see below).

Accessing this waterfall requires a long, difficult cross-country hike and bushwhack from Odis Barron Road. Abandoned logging roads weave up the south side of the South Prong drainage. They have many obstacles but will get you close to the falls.
