Big Thomas Creek Falls
Chattahoochee National Forest
Rabun County
Dillard, GA
GPS Location:

Waterfall Height:
100 feet
Of the many beautiful waterfalls in the Darnell Creek valley near Dillard, 100-foot Big Thomas Creek Falls is by far the tallest and most spectacular. This big, steep sliding waterfall lies on Thomas Creek just above the Darnell Creek confluence, where Thomas Creek abruptly drops off a steep escarpment enroute to the bottom of the Darnell Creek gorge.
The Darnell Creek Trail passes a good view of Big Thomas Creek Falls through the trees while enroute to Ramey Creek Falls. This distant birds-eye view truly allows one to appreciate the full height of this impressive waterfall. Curiously, a wooden sign with the name "Sky Falls" was recently nailed to a tree here. I have never heard of this name before and am unsure about its legitimacy.
Accessing the base of Big Thomas Creek Falls is much more difficult. Reaching it from the Darnell Creek Trail is nearly impossible due to extremely dense vegetation and rugged terrain. Most people prefer to approach Big Thomas Creek Falls via a faint path leading from Darnell Creek Road above the falls. This steep, overgrown path leads to a series of vantage points along the side of the falls. The whole area is very precarious due to the sheer drop-offs.
