Browntown Falls

Paulding Forest WMA

Paulding County
Rockmart, GA

GPS Location:

33.94919, -85.02414

Waterfall Height:

15 feet

Located in an area of nondescript rolling hills at the far western end of Paulding County, Browntown Falls is a remarkably unique waterfall for this lowland part of Georgia. The waterfall features a miniature slot canyon ending with a crystal clear plunge pool, a semicircular bluff amphitheater towering 30 feet high, and a fun creekwalk feeling as if it came straight out of the North Georgia mountains. Although the height of Browntown Falls is a mere 15 feet, the setting is extraordinary and feels very much boxed in by cliffs. The pool at the base isn't deep enough for much swimming but is excellent for wading and cooling off.

Browntown Falls can be reached via a cross-country, unmarked hike from the Paulding Forest WMA gate at the end of Old Mountain Road. The waterfall lies along an unnamed creek feeding into Thompson Creek. To get there, follow the old road beyond the gate for about a mile to fork. Then, go left and descend a steep hill down to the creek. From here, Browntown Falls can be reached with a 0.25-mile off-trail creekwalk heading upstream, passing occasional minor rock scrambles.

Browntown Falls is named after the Brown family, a prominent local family who settled a couple miles south of the falls in the 1800s. Nearby Browntown Road is also named in their honor. According to local residents, the waterfall was once known as the "Browns' Wash Hole."
