A favorite spot of mine to visit along the Chattooga Wild & Scenic River, Crack in the Rock Rapids is a long, picturesque run of stairstepping cascades and rapids along the river. The total height of the drop is about 15 feet, spread across roughly 60 feet of river. The final part of the rapids is squeezed into a tight slot between a large boulder and expansive bedrock slabs, hence the "Crack in the Rock" moniker. The river then empties into a huge pool, which makes for a stunning swimming hole. I've also seen this beautiful place referred to as the "Grand Staircase of the Chattooga."
Although Crack in the Rock Rapids may not be a true waterfall, it's quite an alluring destination. The rapids are located off a brief side path along the Chattooga River Trail, which follows the South Carolina side of the river between Highway 28 and Burrells Ford.
Crack in the Rock lies about 2 miles south of the scramble path to Big Bend Falls. The two waterfalls make for a fantastic pairing on a hot summer day. I've visited both waterfalls while shuttle-hiking the trail from the Nicholson Ford trailhead at Licklog Creek to Burrells Ford Road. Additionally, there exists a 4.5-mile loop hike option visiting both falls via the Big Bend Trail, Chattooga River Trail, and unmarked Crack in the Rock Trail from the end of Big Bend Road.
