50 feet

Gold Mine Branch Falls is a magnificent and incredibly picturesque 50-foot waterfall. Its photogenic qualities are enhanced by the unique twin-flow nature of the drop. This one is among my favorite lesser-known waterfalls in the Chattooga River area. The waterfall lies at the head of an abrupt gorge along Gold Mine Branch, whose waters flow into Warwoman Creek before reaching the Chattooga. I especially love the towering white pines and open sandbar at the base of Gold Mine Branch Falls.

Gold Mine Branch Falls is accessed by a faint, unmarked scramble path from Willis Knob Road (FR 157). In order to reach the base of the falls, the path first approaches from the top and then descends to the base on the south side, after swinging around steep terrain near the falls. The hike is only 0.35 mile but can be challenging to navigate for hikers inexperienced with bushwhacking. As of June 2026, I have heard that the January 2026 ice storm made the hike slightly more difficult by adding a pile of downed trees just before the falls.
