Gurley Creek Falls is one of two significant waterfalls located near the Enota Mountain Retreat in Hiawassee, the other being Big Joel Falls. This 60-foot waterfall tumbles in a spectacular free-fall over a magnificent cliff surrounded by lush rhododendron. This is arguably the more picturesque of the two waterfalls, despite being smaller than Big Joel. Below the main waterfall, Gurley Creek keeps tumbling steeply down in a long sliding cascade. While it's hard to observe, including this segment as part of Gurley Creek Falls would double the waterfall height.
Most people don't realize that Gurley Creek Falls lies in the Chattahoochee National Forest, just barely outside the private property of Enota Mountain Retreat. A 0.25-mile scramble trail leads steeply uphill from the Enota Lodge to the falls. Enota has been friendly to public visitors, who have typically been allowed to visit the waterfall for a fee. However, folks can also access Gurley Creek Falls using a longer hike along old logging roads and faint paths from the end of Gurley Creek Road (FR 137). This route is less established and may feel like a bushwhack at times. It approaches the falls from the top and descends a scramble route on the south side.
