Hedden Creek Falls easily places among Georgia's top five most beautiful and magnificent waterfalls. Chock full of raw power, this breathtaking 100-foot free-fall feels out of place for Georgia. The tremendous sheer cliff is a sight to behold, reminiscent of the monster waterfalls found aplenty along North Carolina’s Highlands Plateau. At high flow, the cloud of mist emanating from the waterfall will leave you drenched no matter where you stand. This majestic waterfall is impressive even in drought conditions when the lack of spray makes photography easier. Just above the falls, a high-altitude wetland helps Hedden Creek retain flow during dry spells by soaking water in like a sponge.
Perhaps the biggest mystery about Hedden Creek Falls is the lack of visitors. I would file this waterfall in the “just off the road” category; you can hear it slightly while driving Glade Road. A makeshift path — albeit faint and rough — goes directly to the falls. The unmarked path descends to a creek crossing just above the falls before steeply descending to the base between a series of cliffs on the other side.
Anybody who’s nimble, in decent shape, and has a basic sense of navigation should have no issues reaching the base. Yet solitude is all but guaranteed here. I’m sure the rough dirt road keeps people away, but off-roading enthusiasts couldn’t ask for a better adventure. Even if you lack the proper vehicle, a 2-mile walk along a dirt road won’t stop most regular hikers. Traffic along the road is low, and its surroundings feel very remote.
