Henry Mill Falls is the most remote waterfall at Cochran Mill Park. Located along Bear Creek, it lies several miles downstream from Bear Creek Falls and below the confluence with Little Bear Creek. Perhaps this 15-foot waterfall isn't the grandest drop, but it's one of my favorite waterfall hikes in metro Atlanta. The western side of Cochran Mill Park offers lots of solitude, and you're unlikely to have much company at this waterfall. Henry Mill Falls spills over several tiers of expansive granite bedrock, perfect for lounging in the sun by the water. Towering pine trees cling to the surrounding rock outcrops, much like along a rugged mountain creek.
From the main parking area along Cochran Mill Road, the hike to Henry Mill Falls is about 2.9 miles each way. The hike can easily be combined with visits to Little Bear Creek Falls and Bear Creek Falls for a more complete day. Henry Mill Falls can be accessed using either the Yellow Trail on the south side of Bear Creek or the Red Trail on the creek's north side. The two trails can be used to make a loop, but this is only possible when flow levels are low enough to rock hop the creek at the top of the falls. The Red Trail leads to the best frontal views of the falls without any crossings.
Henry Mill Falls was once home to an old grist mill, which harnessed the water power provided by the grade change along the creek. Compared to the other mills at Cochran Mill Park, little evidence remains of the site of Henry's Mill. The mill was owned and run by the Henry family, whose home was located about a half-mile downstream of the falls. Local lore says that Union soldiers burned the mill during the Civil War. Its sole remaining artifact is an old millstone sunk nearby in Bear Creek, visible only in times of drought.
