GPS Location:

Waterfall Height:

50 feet

Heyerdahl Falls is a tall series of wet-weather waterfalls located in the upper reaches of a tributary of Flat Creek, south of Lake Rabun. The main drop is roughly 50 feet, but it's poorly visible due to overgrowth from rhododendron and doghobble on the sides. Additional smaller drops lie downstream, mostly enshrouded in vegetation as well.

Heyerdahl Falls is named after Thor Heyerdahl, the Norwegian explorer. Although located in the Chattahoochee National Forest, the waterfall lies near the mountaintop property of Terra Incognita Vineyard. The waterfall's name embodies the spirit of outdoor adventure promoted by the vineyard. A steep, faint trail from the vineyard leads near the waterfall but is only accessible to guests. Any other approach to Heyerdahl Falls from public land will be a long, challenging bushwhack.

In my book, I called this waterfall Thanksgiving Falls. This was before I became aware of the more established Heyerdahl Falls name.
