High Shoals Falls

Swallow Creek Wildlife Management Area

Towns County
Helen, GA

GPS Location:

34.82237, -83.72208

Waterfall Height:

120 feet

Located north of Helen, High Shoals Falls is one of the most spectacular and beloved waterfalls in North Georgia. If I had to choose just one tourist waterfall to visit in the area, High Shoals is the one I'd come to. Sitting deep in a lush, shaded cove along High Shoals Creek, this majestic split-flow waterfall towers 120 feet high. During wetter periods, the waterfall's roaring flow overspreads the entire cliff face. About 80 feet of the waterfall are visible from the bottom, and an upper tier lies just out of sight from the base.

High Shoals Falls is located at the end of the High Shoals Falls Trail, which starts at Indian Grave Gap Road (FR 283). The trail gradually descends for 1.25 mile to the falls, briefly becoming moderately steeper just before the falls. A wooden observation deck provides a nice overview of the waterfall, but people often leave it to rock hop along the boulders below.

Note that the Forest Service Road leading to the High Shoals Falls Trailhead makes a vehicle ford of the Hiwassee River. Novice dirt road drivers often express concern about this ford. Fprtunately, the creek is shallow and solid enough that most vehicles will pass at normal flow levels, except for especially low-sitting sedans.
