Holcomb Canyon Falls is a stunning series of tight waterfalls dropping through a unique slot canyon along the lower end of Holcomb Creek, just before the creek drops into the West Fork Chattooga River at Three Forks. This is one of just three slot canyon waterfalls in Georgia, all of which are found here in Clayton. What sets apart a slot canyon from other mountain gorges is its highly narrow width, squeezed into a sliver by sheer rock walls on both sides. The total height of Holcomb Canyon Falls is about 100 feet, but it consists of multiple drops and cannot be seen all at once due to the canyon's tightness. Keep in mind Holcomb Canyon Falls lies several miles downstream from Holcomb Creek Falls, on the same stream. What a way to cap off this waterfall-filled creek!
Holcomb Canyon Falls is accessed from the Three Forks Trail. This 1.5-mile trail starts at Overflow Creek Road (FR 86) and leads to the confluence of Big Creek, Overflow Creek, and Holcomb Creek at Three Forks, giving rise to the West Fork Chattooga River. Many people only get to see the upper tier of Holcomb Canyon Falls, which lies right along the Three Forks Trail just below a ford of Holcomb Creek and denotes the start of the canyon. The trail then makes a very steep, rugged scramble descent down to Three Forks. While the trail bypasses the lower part of the canyon, it can be reached with a short creekwalk and rock scramble up from Three Forks.
Holcomb Canyon Falls is sometimes called Swiss Cheese Falls due to the many unique, pothole-filled rock formations in the canyon, resembling swiss cheese.
