A few miles northwest of Commerce, the North Oconee River drops about 20 feet over a long series of rapids known as Hurricane Shoals. Surrounded by expansive slabs of rolling bedrock, these rapids are much like a natural water park and stay extremely popular for swimming, tubing, and wading throughout the summer months. Hurricane Shoals is the centerpiece of Hurricane Shoals Park and is located only a couple hundred feet below the main parking area by the covered bridge. Little to no walking is needed to view the shoals, although short nature trails do follow both sides of the river.
