Lower Mill Creek Falls

Tray Mountain Wilderness

Towns County
Hiawassee, GA

GPS Location:

34.86620, -83.66990

Waterfall Height:

60 feet

Located in the headwaters of Mill Creek east of the Unicoi Turnpike, Lower Mill Creek Falls lies about 300 feet downstream from Upper Mill Creek Falls. Unlike the upper falls, the lower falls lies on Mill Creek itself, directly at the confluence with the smaller tributary. The two streams slide separately down a broad cliff, forming a twin falls in the waterfall's upper section. The streams then converge into a long, swift chute dropping into a small pool.

The total height of Lower Mill Creek Falls is 60 feet. However, encroaching vegetation makes it difficult to get a clear view of the full drop. The surrounding bedrock, which is very slippery when wet, ifeatures colorful banded gneiss bisected by veins of quartz. The lower falls can be reached via a scramble path that continues downstream from Upper Mill Creek Falls, after starting from Mill Creek Road (FR 28-2).

These waterfalls on Mill Creek in Hiawassee should not be confused with another spectacular set of waterfalls on a different MIll Creek in the Cohutta Mountains of Northwest Georgia.
