Mary Steele Falls is a little-known 20-foot waterfall found along the Pear Orchard Trail, which is part of the Frady Branch multi-use trail system near Toccoa. Despite being an officially marked site along the trail, this sliding waterfall is oddly absent from conventional waterfall literature. Mary Steele Falls forms a series of sliding drops across a large, sloping rock slab surrounded by towering white pines. Although this waterfall isn't large, I really love its setting.
Mary Steele Falls lies just below the point where the Pear Orchard Trail crosses Big Leatherwood Creek, an easy to moderate 1.7-mile hike from Currahee Mountain Road. The waterfall is named for Mary Steele, who spent countless hours walking through these woods and sharing information that enabled the protection of over 240 historic sites in the area. Raised in the area now encompassing Lake Russell WMA, Mary deemed this waterfall her favorite resting spot.
