A surprising waterfall for its lowland location, Miner Shoals Falls is a spectacular 40-foot sliding drop along the Soquee River just outside the Clarkesville. With a width of about 200 feet, the waterfall is over four times wider than it is high.
Miner Shoals Falls lies on the private property of the historic Habersham Mills, which includes six vintage rental properties. The waterfall is not open to the public and can only be visited by guests or with special permission. This is a fascinating property, a rare surviving example of a former mill village. The oldest building at the site began as an ironworks operation in 1837. The property became a textile mill after the Civil War, first producing wool and later switching to cotton. A company village formed over time, including a general store, post office, school, and barbershop. Habersham Mills shut down in 1999 with operations shifting to cheaper overseas labor. Luckily, the historic structures escaped demolition. For the past dozen years, new owners have been rehabilitating the structures to restore the original mill community spirit.
