50 feet
Less than two miles into the Cohutta Wilderness, Poplar Springs Falls is a 50-foot off-trail waterfall located along Poplar Springs Branch on the slopes of Betty Mountain. This multi-tiered fall features a sheer slide at the top and a sloping free fall section in the middle. A large portion of the waterfall is covered in blowdown, so this one is mainly for hardcore explorers.
From the large campsite along FR 64 at Poplar Springs Gap, follow Poplar Springs Branch about a mile downstream until it flows westward. From there, it’s a steep and difficult bushwhack to view each section of the falls. You cannot descend to the base from river left, as a large rock face blocks the way. Crossing to the river right side after the first drop is a more manageable route to the base.
