GPS Location:

Waterfall Height:
20 feet
A 20-foot waterfall with a beautiful sandbar, Sandy Bottom Falls is the uppermost waterfall on the Middle Fork Broad River in Lake Russell WMA. It is often visited as part of a pairing with the more spectactular Sellars Falls found downstream. Perhaps the most interesting feature of Sandy Bottom Falls is the clear, sand-bottom river that has given it its name.
Sandy Bottom Falls lies about 0.2 mile below a historic stone tunnel through which flows the Middle Fork Broad River. This tunnel was built to accomodate a now-defunct railroad track. Hikers access the tunnel and waterfall from the end of Pumping Station Road (FR 89), which is usually closed to vehicles. The area is also approached from the same parking area as for Tabor Falls along Sellers Road (FR 89A), which dead-ends into Pumping Station Road.
From the old stone tunnel, an unmarked footpath follows the east side of the Middle Fork Broad River downstream to Sandy Bottom Falls.
