Second Prong Falls is a scenic 40-foot waterfall found in the remote upper reaches of the Keener Creek valley near Dillard. The waterfall sits on a technically unnamed tributary flowing into Keener Creek, but it has been nicknamed Second Prong to mirror the marked First Prong tributary found a bit to the south. At times of higher flow, Second Prong Falls forms a twin waterfall surrounded by a lush rhododendron jungle. An impressive sheltered cliff recess lies adjacent to the waterfall, home to a lively community of liverworts and lush moss in its dark, moist environment.
Second Prong Falls lies near the old, decommissioned Keener Creek Trail, which begins along Patterson Gap Road (FR 32) at Hopper Branch. Although the trail is no longer officially maintained, it remains followable and fairly easy to find. There are plenty of fallen trees to climb over, though some appear to get cleared unofficially from time to time. The trail reaches Keener Creek just south of the Second Prong confluence, so a short 300-foot bushwhack is needed to access the waterfall.
