Sorrels Branch Falls is a wonderful hidden gem just minutes from Hwy 180 in Hiawassee. This picturesque 50-foot waterfall lies on Sorrels Branch, which flows through an inconspicuous culvert at Hwy 180 about 0.15 mile below the waterfall. Despite its close proximity to this frequently traveled roadway, Sorrels Branch Falls is often overlooked due to the lack of a designated hiking trail or established parking area. An unmarked footpath follows the east side of Sorrels Branch from the road up to the falls.
Visitors will note a terraced, rectangular stone enclosure standing in plain sight at the very top of Sorrels Branch Falls. Its unusual location lies on a small island between two branches of the creek. The most widely-accepted theory is this was a power-generating structure for nearby CCC Camp Soapstone, fueled by the rushing waters. However, it's unclear why the lower end of the structure is walled, leaving no opening for water to flow through. Another plausible theory is that the structure was a trout hatchery. The stone terraces resemble water tanks, potentially built to raise trout and stock nearby streams for fishermen.
