Spoilcane Falls is a magnificent 120-foot waterfall in the headwaters of Spoilcane Creek, hidden away down below Hwy 17/75 near Unicoi Gap. Thousands of sightseers travel up this highway daily, unaware of the beauty hiding in the steep-sided gorge below. At the base of this huge waterfall, you will only see the bottom 70 to 80 feet because the cliff's slant steadily steepens from top to bottom. The lower tier tumbles over an especially striking cliff, defined by dozens of distinct layers.
Although Spoilcane Falls lies only 0.1 mile from Hwy 17/75, reaching the bottom requires a very steep and difficult bushwhack. The old, historic route of the Unicoi Turnpike travels west of Spoilcane Creek near the bottom of the falls. Although this old road once provided a fairly easy route to Spoilcane Falls, it now lies under hundreds of fallen trees downed by the strong winds of Hurricane Irma.
