Thunder Dome Falls is the largest waterfall on Big Creek, one of three major creeks feeding the West Fork Chattooga River confluence at Three Forks. It is the second of four significant waterfalls on the Georgia segment of this creek and is located 0.5 mile above Three Forks. About 70 feet high, Thunder Dome Falls tumbles in several tiers through a tight slot canyon before emptying into a deep punchbowl-shaped pool, surrounded by majestic cliffs. This is one of Georgia's most unique waterfalls, and it's easily in my top 10 favorites. The pool at the base makes for one of the best waterfall swimming holes I've ever seen. The setting feels wild and pristine.

In the past, Thunder Dome Falls was known as Big Creek Falls. My understanding is that the current name developed in the kayaking community, though it's now widely used by everybody. Given how the water thunders through the canyon and echoes off the cliffs, "Thunder Dome" feels fitting. I'd love to know the daredevils brave enough to paddle Big Creek. This is one steep run, even wilder than Overflow Creek!

The 2.1-mile hike to Thunder Dome Falls follows a series of unmarked trails from Highway 28, starting from a parking area just north of the Big Creek bridge. The first part of the hike follows an unofficial trail leading to Three Forks, but you will then want to turn left onto a more rugged side path that follows Big Creek down to Thunder Dome Falls. While most of the hike is  mild to moderate, the last part of the path to the bottom of the falls is very steep, narrow, and rugged.
