Upper Ammons Creek Falls is a 40-foot waterfall located off-trail just a few hundred feet above Ammons Creek Falls. I have seen a few pictures showing this to be a picturesque waterfall, but at the time of my visit in 2022, it was heavily covered by several large, fallen trees. Perhaps those trees were moved by the strong floods that have since occurred in this area.
Despite being so close to the lower falls, it is extremely difficult to reach Ammons Creek Falls from the official trail due to a practically impenetrable wall of vegetation. Instead, a somewhat better off-trail route exists from Holcomb Creek Road (FR 696) just to the north. The woods are more open on this side of the gorge, but the terrain remains very steep.
