Upper Black Falls

Camp Frank D. Merrill

Lumpkin County
Dahlonega, GA

GPS Location:

34.62298, -84.10595

Waterfall Height:

60 feet

Upper Black Falls is the second in a pair of significant waterfalls located along the upper reaches of the Etowah River, northwest of Dahlonega. About twice taller than the lower falls, Upper Black Falls is a 60-foot steeply-sliding waterfall. It's especially impressive in high flow conditions. Upper Black Falls lies on the property of Camp Frank D. Merrill, a military base operated by the United States Army on Chattahoochee National Forest land under an FS Special Use Permit.

Camp Merrill graciously allows the public to visit Upper Black Falls, but visitors are required to first stop for permission at the guardhouse along Hightower Church Road. The camp's property can be off limits to the public on certain days when active training is in progress. The walk to Upper Black Falls is quite easy and a quicker journey than to the lower falls.
