Located deep in the Mark Trail Wilderness, Upper Chattahoochee River is the uppermost waterfall on the Chattahoochee River. Surrounded by a lush rhododendron jungle, the waterfall lies a mere 1.2 miles from the river's headwater spring at Chattahoochee Gap on the Appalachian Trail. It's also about 1.4 miles upstream from Chute Falls, which was formerly believed to be the upper waterfall on the Chattahoochee until this remote waterfall became documented.
The trek to Upper Chattahoochee Falls is a serious off-trail navigation adventure. Faint fishermen paths follow the west side of the river beyond Chute Falls, but what little path is there ends at the confluence of a strong unnamed creek below Coon Den Ridge. From here, the last 0.3 mile to the waterfall is a challenging bushwhack and creekwalk.
