Upper Cochrans Falls

Chattahoochee National Forest

Dawson County
Dahlonega, GA

GPS Location:

34.58033, -84.21308

Waterfall Height:

15 feet

A set of small waterfalls lies on Cochrans Creek slightly above the primary monster drop of Cochrans Falls. The first 15-foot drop of Cochrans Falls is located 250 feet upstream from the brink of Cochrans Falls. Another 150 feet farther up the creek lies a multi-tier, 25-foot drop partly cloaked in rhododendron. In addition, a small tributary joins Cochrans Creek between the brink of Cochrans Falls and Upper Cochrans Falls. The tributary is home to a long sliding cascade that has been nicknamed Shrouded Falls.

Reaching Upper Cochrans Falls requires climbing to the top of Cochrans Falls via an extremely steep and precarious scramble path up through the cliffs. This route is only for very experienced and agile hikers. Numerous injuries and fatalities have occurred here over the years. Those who can safely access the top of Cochrans Falls will be rewarded with one of the best views found at the top of any waterfall in Georgia, from an expansive rock slab. Be extremely careful walking around the edges, as a fall here would certainly be fatal. A campsite lies nearby. There is no path from here to Upper Cochrans Falls, but it's just a quick walk up the shallow stream.
