Upper Keener Creek Falls is a steeply-sliding 50-foot waterfall found in the upper reaches of Keener Creek near Dillard. It lies 0.1 mile above the confluence with a large stream known unofficially as Second Prong. The waterfall’s most spectacular feature is a foliated gneiss rock slab with bright orange banding. Although I have seen this striking formation at some waterfalls in North Carolina, this is the only Georgia waterfall where I have come across such a beautiful rock formation.
Attaining a good view of Upper Keener Creek Falls is very challenging due to its location being right in the middle of a dense rhododendron thicket. The old, decommissioned Keener Creek Trail from Patterson Gap Road (FR 32) reaches Keener Creek near the Second Prong confluence. However, there is absolutely no trail of any sort leading upstream through the thicket to this waterfall. Upper Keener Creek Falls is mainly for hardcore waterfallers who are willing to fight the dense vegetation and steep dropoffs.
I suspect there are other cascades and small waterfalls located upstream from Upper Keener Creek Falls due to the steep, rugged terrain indicated by topographic data. However, I have not seen pictures of any.
