Upper Mill Creek Falls is a scenic 40-foot waterfall located in the headwaters of Mill Creek east of the Unicoi Turnpike. Despite its name, the waterfall does not lie directly on Mill Creek, but rather an unnamed tributary sometimes called Ground Hog Branch. The stream joins Mill Creek 200 feet downstream.
Upper Mill Creek Falls slides steeply over a large sloping rock, noted for its yellow gneiss banding alternating in darker and lighter colors across the entire cliff. The falls can look skimpy in dry times and are best seen during wet weather. The waterfall lies 0.15 mile below a campsite along Mill Creek Road (FR 28-2). From the campsite, an unmarked scramble path descends steeply down to the base of the falls.
These waterfalls on Mill Creek in Hiawassee should not be confused with another spectacular set of waterfalls on a different MIll Creek in the Cohutta Mountains of Northwest Georgia.
