Upper Moccasin Falls
Chattahoochee National Forest
Rabun County
Clayton, GA
GPS Location:
34.85748, -83.60766
Waterfall Height:
40 feet
Located near Lake Burton, Upper Moccasin Falls is truly the most beautiful and picturesque waterfall on Moccasin Creek. It gets overshadowed by the much easier and more tourist-friendly to Hemlock Falls, which is the lower falls on Moccasin Creek. Meanwhile, Upper Moccasin Falls is twice larger and much wider than Hemlock Falls, with a lofty height of 40 feet. At higher flow levels, this even becomes a twin waterfall splitting around a small dry spot in the middle of the cliff. The base of Upper Moccasin Falls is home to an outstanding swimming hole.
Hikers access Upper Moccasin Falls by first following the easy Hemlock Falls Trail from Moccasin Creek State Park to Hemlock Falls. From here, it is another 0.6 mile of rugged scrambling along unofficial trail to the upper falls. This unofficial trail bypasses the east side of Hemlock Falls, crosses Moccasin Creek shortly thereafter, and then follows an old railbed along the west side of Moccasin Creek to the upper falls. At the end, a steep side path descends to the base of Upper Moccasin Falls. Just ahead lies a set of alluring primitive campsites, hidden deep in the woods near the top of Upper Moccasin Falls.
