Georgia's Trusted Local Source for Waterfall Explorations Since 2018

Upper Sorrels Branch Falls

Chattahoochee National Forest

Towns County
Hiawassee, GA

GPS Location:

34.83576, -83.74709

Waterfall Height:

25 feet

Engulfed in a rhododendron thicket, Upper Sorrels Branch Falls is a 25-foot waterfall located a hundred feet upstream from the main tier of Sorrels Branch Falls. Although the upper falls is less spectacular than the bigger waterfall downstream, this bonus waterfall is worth seeing for the more intrepid explorer. A fainter path with downed trees continues past Sorrels Branch Falls along an old logging road on the east side of the stream.

A perk of visiting Upper Sorrels Branch Falls is that you can observe up close the mysterious, man-made stone enclosure in the creek. The most widely-accepted theory is this was a power-generating structure for nearby CCC Camp Soapstone, but it could have also been a CCC trout hatchery.
